What are Earthly Textures?

Earthly Textures evoke the rocky, sandy textures we find in nature, calling to mind the feeling of running one's hand over stone or other mineral surfaces.

Since Jasmine Rae first invented these techniques more than 15 years ago, they have swept the cake industry and become a signal of artistry and naturalistic elegance to discerning clients worldwide.

This workshop is the only opportunity to learn these singular techniques from the person who created them: hear the stories behind how they were invented, understand the philosophies that guide their application, and form a deeper connection to this work than you could anywhere else.

What You'll Learn

In this workshop, you'll explore how cake decorating strategies that honor natural processes can be applied to simple materials to create surfaces that feel elemental, tactile, and alive.

The workshop will focus on three core techniques:

  1. Rough Stone
  2. Raw Stone
  3. Crystalline

... plus additional variations like marbling and kintsugi, layering earth tones to create strata, and deckling.

You'll finish the workshop with a foundational vocabulary of earthy finishes that can become the starting point for an entire cake design, and an integral focal point rather than an embellishment added at the end.

Your Artwork, Your Voice

You have a unique way of making art that no one else can replicate.

We call this your Theory of Practice.

While you will spend time learning signature techniques from Jasmine, you will also be supported in exploring your unique perspective as a cake artist.

Earthly Textures occur when we accept irregularity, and find beauty in what happens naturally when our hands interact with our materials.

During the workshop, you will develop your own relationship with these techniques and create cake art that is completely unique to you.

Earthly Textures: A Closer Look

Featuring Rough Stone, Raw Stone, and Crystalline

Workshop Overview

Practice seeing texture as a design language—and discover how a small set of repeatable principles can generate an almost limitless range of outcomes.

Week 1: LEARN

Learn Jasmine's core suite of Earthly techniques: Rough Stone, Raw Stone, and Crystalline.

As you begin to practice these techniques, you'll take time to notice what happens as your hands work the materials.

Week 1 Discovery:
"Here's what I do naturally."

Week 2: DEVELOP

Discover variations on the core Earthly techniques, like Marbling, Earthly Kintsugi, Strata, Pitting, and Deckling.

As you practice, you will take the techniques beyond imitation and begin to make them your own as you change variables, make decisions, and negotiate challenges.

Week 2 Discovery:
"Here's what I prefer, and here's why."

Week 3: PLAY

A moment of deliberately less constrained exercise that allows you to push, combine, distort, abandon, or reinvent what you've learned.

This is where your artistic voice comes out clear. Bring in elements of sculpting, painting embellishments, and other techniques that you already love to use in your artwork.

Week 3 Discovery:
"Here's what makes my approach mine."

Week 4: APPLY

Now that you have some clarity on how you make art, we'll take a look at your business practices and strategies through the same lens.

Walk away with a new perspective on how to make business a part of your artistic practice, rather than the challenge that keeps you from your art in the first place.

Week 4 Discovery:
"If this is how I naturally create art, how could I build a business that works the same way?"

Meet Jasmine Rae

I fell in love with cakes years after I started making them professionally.

Jumping between art and science until they blurred into one has been the vibration of my entire professional life. And somehow, for over 20 years, I've stayed true to the fine art of cake-making, even while earning a Master's in Somatic Psychology, practicing as a Psychotherapist, and raising a child.

My 20 years in the studio has been about innovation, cultivating my artist's perspective, and bringing unusual edible materials to the cake world.

I teach to make this world feel a little more real and accessible, and I'm on a mission to help humans stay embodied and creatively healthy in the sensory world.
